My husband went to the store and didn’t come back. Forty years later, I saw him again at the train station. With tears in his eyes, he said to me, ‘You won’t believe what happened to me.
It’s been forty years now since my husband disappeared. One day, while I was cooking, I asked him to go buy some milk, and that was the last time I saw him.
At first, I thought he was simply meeting a friend or neighbor and was running late. But as the day progressed, my concern grew.
When he didn’t come home that evening, I called the store. The cashier told me they hadn’t seen him all day. None of our neighbors or friends had seen him either.
I didn’t hesitate and contacted the police. When they came to our house, they asked me a few questions and assured me they would find him quickly.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Rumors began to circulate among the neighbors. Some said he had run away, others claimed I had chased him away.
As time went on, I began to lose all hope. And then, forty years later, one morning, I found an envelope in the mailbox, with no return address.
Inside was a single sentence: “Hurry to the station.” The handwriting was unfamiliar to me, but I immediately thought it was his. So I hurried over.
Arriving at the station, I saw him. A man sitting on a bench, his hands clasped in his lap. His hair was white, his back slightly bent, but it was definitely him.
I walked over, my heart pounding. He turned to me, smiled, and said, “You won’t believe what happened to me.”

“They took me, Clara,” he began, his voice weak.
“Forty years ago, some men captured me on the street and forced me into a car.
I had a huge debt and they made me work for them.
They knew everything about me, about you, about the children.
They threatened to kill you if I ran away or contacted you.”
Tears streamed down my face. “Why didn’t you escape?”
“I tried, but they had allies everywhere. Even if I fled, they would come for you.”
“After an FBI raid, I had a chance, but I was captured again. They offered me a deal: work undercover in exchange for the safety of my family.”
“Finally, they were arrested, and I am free,” he said.
