I sat in the waiting room, gently rocking my three-week-old daughter. I hadn’t slept a wink for several nights; she had a fever, and hearing her incessant crying broke my heart. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t calm her.

A man sat next to me, wearing an expensive suit and a luxurious watch glittering on his wrist. I could tell he was getting annoyed with every cry my daughter gave.

He turned to the nurse, visibly annoyed, and said coldly, “Can we speed it up? My time is worth more than that!” Then, turning to me, he added, “Can someone make this kid shut up? I can’t stand her screaming anymore.”

A heavy silence fell over the waiting room. All eyes turned to me, and I felt almost invisible in my suffering, with my little girl still crying.
