I hired my best friend as a housemaid, paying her more than 10,000 persons.

Her confession was like a bolt out of the blue. She admitted that my father-in-law had been secretly slipping into her room at night, whispering strange and unsettling things to her. At first, she thought he was just sleepwalking or confused in his old age, but soon realized that his nocturnal visits were entirely intentional.

“He would come in and talk about… things,” she murmured, her eyes reflecting a mix of fear and confusion. “Things I didn’t understand, stories of the past, of people I never knew, spoken in a tone that… made my skin crawl.”

I was dumbfounded. My father-in-law had always been a quiet and reserved man, not given to storytelling, let alone such bizarre behavior. The soundproof room he had requested suddenly made more sense, albeit a sinister one. It was meant to ensure his nightly visits would go unnoticed, his eerie narratives confined within those walls.

My friend went on to reveal that he had also started asking her to perform strange rituals—insisting that they were for his health and longevity. “He said the room would be a sanctuary,” she explained, her voice quivering. “A place where he could connect with… other worlds.”

The thought of my father-in-law dabbling in such obscure practices was unsettling. It painted a picture of a man I barely recognized, and I couldn’t comprehend how I had never noticed the changes in him. My heart ached for my friend, who had been caught in the middle of this bizarre situation and had felt too afraid to speak out.

I realized then that I had to protect her, and myself, from whatever was transpiring under our roof. Gathering my resolve, I decided to talk to my husband. He deserved to know the truth about his father’s strange behavior.

Confronting him was not easy. The revelation was met with disbelief and denial; after all, how could the man who had raised him be engaging in such peculiar activities? But as we pieced together the recent changes in his father’s demeanor, we couldn’t ignore the possibility.

Together, we approached my father-in-law. He didn’t deny his actions but instead spoke of them as if they were the most natural thing in the world. He claimed the soundproof room was necessary for his “work”—work which he believed was vital for the family’s protection.

His conviction was unsettling, and his refusal to explain further left us with no choice. We sought professional help, bringing in doctors and therapists to evaluate his mental state. It was a tough decision, but necessary for his well-being and the safety of those around him.

As for my friend, I apologized profusely for placing her in such a distressing situation. I offered her a chance to leave, to find a job more suited to her talents and where she could feel safe. Graciously, she accepted, but not without assuring me of her continued friendship and support.

In the end, we decided against building the soundproof room. Instead, we focused on restoring a sense of normalcy to our lives, grateful for the insights gained and the bonds strengthened through adversity.
