In 2012, Melissa carried the sad title of the world’s heaviest woman. She was only 31, and her weight was approaching 300 kilograms. She dreamed of becoming a mother — but it felt like she was trapped inside her own body.
Every movement was incredibly difficult for her. She could barely move her legs and realized she would soon be unable to walk at all.
In her youth, Melissa could never have imagined she would become the heaviest woman in the world.
She didn’t even remember herself as thin. Since childhood, food had been her comfort and her joy. Her parents spoiled her without thinking of where their indulgence might lead.
At 18, Melissa already weighed 120 kg. But at the time she didn’t see it as a problem — she was active, cheerful, and surrounded by friends. Moreover, men showed interest in her, and she felt attractive.
At 22, she met Chris. He truly loved her, and her extra weight didn’t bother him. At that point, Melissa already weighed 150 kg. They soon got married, dreaming of a big family.
But the years passed, and no pregnancy came. The doctors agreed: with that weight, she would be unable to get pregnant or carry a child.
This was a shock for Melissa. She realized she could no longer live in that body. After much thought, she decided on surgery — surgeons removed part of her stomach.
When Melissa woke up from the anesthesia, she felt something strange: for the first time in her life, she wasn’t hungry. Her portions were drastically reduced — at one meal she could barely manage 100 milliliters, and often left food unfinished.
Her weight started to drop rapidly. In three years, Melissa lost 200 kg, and in the next two years another 30. In total, she lost 230 kg and achieved an incredible result: 62 kg!
Everything changed. She learned to love herself in a new way. She was able to restore her health and — most importantly — Melissa became a mother. Three times. Her dream came true.
This incredible story inspired many. In her honor, a project was created to support people with food addiction, which has already helped dozens of “overweight” people overcome their fears and illnesses — and start a new life.
